“Throw me something, mister!!”

Mardi Gras is the beloved season of delicious King Cakes, festive floats, shiny beads flying, jazz music blaring, horses trotting and doubloons clinking on the ground. “We don’t hide the crazy… We parade it down the street!”

Though the birthplace of these parades is across the bay in Mobile, our small town has taken on Mardi Gras with its own style. For example, the purple, yellow and green festivities can’t begin without the proper debut of Fairhope’s finest… it’s pups! Every year, The Haven puts on a pawsome parade featuring dogs of all shapes and sizes. Anyone is welcome to join the parade by registering at https://mysticmutts.org !   

Fairhope’s warm Mardi Gras spirit is cherished by many. Some schools even take off an entire week of classes in honor of it! These parades bring the whole town together for nights of bead catchin’ and Moon Pie munchin’. Fairhope respects a family-friendly atmosphere full of fun for all ages. It’s a safe place for kids to even run street to street (behind the barriers) to keep up with the floats. Not only are there so many goodies to catch from the floats driving by, but there are also some wonderful, lighthearted performances by the high school band and dance line.

When attending Fairhope’s Mardi Gras parades, don’t forget these helpful tips:

• Take a bag to collect beads and goodies
• You don’t need to be right up on the barriers to see or catch!
• Bring lawn chairs if you come early to claim a spot
• Remember the only public bathrooms are at the Fairhope Visitors Center
• Don’t stand under (or too close to) a tree!
