Throwing a cast net is an honored local art form – and can make you appear brilliant or foolish within the span of 60 seconds. In a spread of netting carrying 1lb lead weights per foot to make sure it sinks (before bait fish can escape), cast nets come in a variety of sizes and run about $8 to $35. You’ll find videos on just the right technique – involving the teeth if you’re going old-school.
You might catch a glimpse of our local sea cows if you watch closely enough… and the season is right. Mantees are slow-moving, gentle almost pre-historic looking creatures protected by state and federal laws. They’re generally found in Florida, but migrate to our waters from April to October while Alabama waters are warm. Magnolia Springs – with its “cold hole” river center – is known as the favorite manatee hangout, and you’ll find signs warning boaters to slow down. The Dauphin Island Sea Lab operates a Manatee Sighting Network, tagging and following their whereabouts.
